TEXAS CPAAA WEB SITE

Visit the Texas CPAAA website at http://texascpaaa.org/ and you will find a lot of information about the state organization. The website contains by-laws, the roster and photo of officers, and minutes of the quarterly state board meetings. You can find a Texas map showing the regions and the counties in each region. There are membership forms for both individuals and local alumni associations.     We have moved the Region One web pages onto the state site. We have made provision for other Regions also, but Region One is the 1st to be there. The CPAA Associations in our region are urged to provide their Internet link or URL of your CPAAA's web page so that it will be listed in the Region One listing of associations. The Texas CPAAA website co-exists with the 2006 Convention website and there is a link on each to the other. Visit http://texascpaaa.org/ at least weekly as more is added. My email for state-related website matters is Leo@TexasCPAAA.org

Directories.  Please keep us informed of any changes in the information in the directory.  We will be publishing a new directory this year and want it to be as accurate and up to date as possible.  Send changes to Charles Billingsley, CharlBill@AOL.com .  The questionnaire that gives all the info needed for the directory is attached.

The Texas Citizen Police Academy Alumni Convention will be in Garland/Richardson on July 19-22, 2006, “Common Ground”. Details are available on their web site - www.TCPAAconvention.org ”.  This promises to be a great convention.  Why not make your vacation plans for 2006 to include this convention?  Region One will have a table and Region One member associations are welcome and urged to make use of the table.  We need as many donated items as possible for a silent auction from our member associations.  Proceeds will go to the scholarship fund.

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly-greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs.  Butterworth, Hungry  Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly  in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes, but despite being a little flaky at times, he was still a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, two  children, John Dough and Jane Dough, and they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held  at 3:50 for about 20  minutes.

Region One Officers and Directors always welcome suggestions about how to make the Region One meetings better and more interesting.  Call any of them with your suggestions.

For those who are going to present activities for your Alumni at meetings, please take a few minutes and prepare your write up in advance and give the secretary a hard copy and a disc so she won’t have to retype.  If you do not submit a written report, it will not be included in the Flash. A good shortcut to get your news in the Flash is to send it directly to CharlBill@AOL.com in the body of an e-mail or as a MS Word attachment to an e-mail.

NATIONAL CPA CONVENTION

My partner, Jean and I attended the national CPA convention in South Bend, Indiana on May 10-12, 2006.  Since we had never been in that part of the country, we decided to go early to see some of it.  We flew into Chicago, rented a car, and spent a couple of days there.  Chicago is a clean, vibrant city and reminded us of the way all cities were years ago. The downtown was teeming with people and there were department stores, all kinds of specialty shops, parks and green spaces and a variety of restaurants.  The weather was great in Chicago, but upon driving to South Bend it started raining.  That was the beginning of a downhill weather pattern.  Leaving Chicago on Saturday after the convention, it was still raining and the temperature was 42 degrees.

The bad weather did not dampen the spirit of a great convention.  The hotel was great and all meals were furnished.  One was in the Notre Dame student dining hall.  The food for the convention was way above the quality usually found at these affairs.  There was a covered walkway to the convention center, so it wasn’t necessary to get out in the inclement weather.  All activities outside were under cover except the tour of the Notre Dame Campus the night before the convention started.  We had a full fledged police escort from the convention hall to the Notre Dame campus.  It was a great tour made in a slight drizzle.

There were the usual CPA related classes along with some extra classes that we had not seen before.  There was time for activities outside the convention activities.  There was a city tour of the city of South Bend and a tour of the Studebaker Museum which was enjoyed by all.  A tour of the world famous Chocolate Factory was offered, but there were a gazillion school students there so we had to pass on that one.  There were over 200 attendees from Florida to Colorado with guests from Ireland, England and Mexico.  Other members attending from Region One were Dottie Duby and Norma DeWeese of Angleton.

The police departments and citizens of the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka were gracious hosts and did all they could to make ours a pleasant visit and we thank them for that.

To those who think these CPA conventions, both national and state, are dull and boring, that is simply not the case.  They are informative, rememberable, and fun!  If you are able to attend one, don’t miss the opportunity.

WE NEED NEWS!  BE SURE TO GET YOUR ALUMNI NEWS TO THE SECRETARY ON A DISC OR BY E-MAIL AND ALSO MAIL TO CHARLBILL@AOL.COM .  IF YOU HAVE A FUNCTION COMING UP, OR HAVE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE OF INTEREST TO REGION ONE MEMBERS, SUBMIT IT AND IT WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE FLASH.

DELEGATE SELECTION FOR THE CONVENTION

Each CPAAA needs to designate a person that is attending the convention as a voting delegate for their organization.  Sometimes this is done informally among the attendees from an association at the convention, but the official procedure calls for more formal appointing.
See following extracted from the state bylaws.
2.1.5 Each local alumni association and/or law enforcement agency will appoint a delegate to the Annual TCPAAA Convention. The delegates’ duties and responsibilities will include the vote of their alumni association and/or law enforcement agency at the annual TCPAAA Convention. Each local alumni association represented at the delegates meeting will have one vote and each law enforcement agency at the delegates meeting will have one vote...
Region 3 used this statement in their May newsletter:

"SWORN AND NON-SWORN DELEGATE TO CONVENTION

During the next two months each member association and those throughout the state will be in the process of selecting both a sworn and non-sworn delegate for the convention. This is the person who will attend the delegates meeting and cast their association’s vote on any issue requiring a vote.

As your association selects those persons, we are requesting you let the secretary (Charlotte Thomas tchar007@cmaaccess.com ) know who these delegates are. This will help both the Garland/Richardson group, and the State Board prepare for this meeting. We will be making a list of each association and their delegates for sign in at this meeting."

Houston.  There is very little going on in the Houston alumni right now.  During the week of May 8th, we will be participating in the Police Week Activities at the HPD Academy.  HPD entertains thousands of elementary school students Monday through Friday of that week. We will be helping to shepherd the students during the tours and activities.   At least one Alumni member will be attending the national CPAA convention in South Bend, Indiana starting May 10th.  Several Alumni members are making plans to attend the Texas CPAA convention in Garland/Richardson in July.  Our search team has been renamed the Response Team to widen the scope of our activities and opportunities.
