In our report on the convention, we neglected to mention that Fay Burke of Lake Jackson CPAAA was recognized as State Alumni of the Year.  This is certainly a credit to Fay, Lake Jackson CPAAA and Region One.  Way to go, Fay!

The Webster CPAAA is having a Pancake Breakfast on September 16th to benefit the Webster CPAAA.  See the Webster Alumni news for details.

TEXAS CPAAA WEB SITE

The state convention website, http://tcpaaconvention.org has been updated since the 2006 convention.  There is a link to the convention photographer's web site page that contains his albums of the convention photos.  He promised a CD would be available with all the photos in the near future.  When I get the information, I will post it there.  Also there is some early information and the registration packet for the 2007 Austin convention. And don't forget to check the Texas CPAAA website also - http://TexasCPAAA.org . It will contain state logo'ed merchandise soon.  I have a page already with some photos of shirts, etc. but don't have pricing yet, so it will wait for David Jusiewicz's recovery from his operation.

Visit the Texas CPAAA website at http://TexasCPAAA.org/ and you will find a lot of information about the state organization. The website contains by-laws, the roster and photo of officers, and minutes of the quarterly state board meetings. You can find a Texas map showing the regions and the counties in each region. There are membership forms for both individuals and local alumni associations.  We have moved the Region One web pages onto the state site. We have made provision for other Regions also, but Region One is the 1st to be there. The CPAA Associations in our region are urged to provide their Internet link or URL of your CPAAA's web page so that it will be listed in the Region One listing of associations. The Texas CPAAA website co-exists with the Convention website and there is a link on each to the other. Visit http://TexasCPAAA.org/ at least weekly as more is added. My email for state-related website matters is Leo@TexasCPAAA.org

Directories.  Please keep us informed of any changes in the information in the directory.  We will be publishing a new directory this year and want it to be as accurate and up to date as possible.  Send changes to Charles Billingsley, charl.bill@yahoo.com

Region One Officers and Directors always welcome suggestions about how to make the Region One meetings better and more interesting.  Call any of them with your suggestions.

For those who are going to present activities for your Alumni at meetings, please take a few minutes and prepare your write up in advance and give the secretary a hard copy and a disc so she won’t have to retype.  If you do not submit a written report, it will not be included in the Flash. A good shortcut to get your news in the Flash is to send it directly to charl.bill@yahoo.com in the body of an e-mail or as a MS Word attachment to an e-mail.

WE NEED NEWS!  BE SURE TO GET YOUR ALUMNI NEWS TO THE SECRETARY ON A DISC OR BY E-MAIL AND ALSO MAIL TO CHARL.BILL@YAHOO.COM .  IF YOU HAVE A FUNCTION COMING UP, OR HAVE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE OF INTEREST TO REGION ONE MEMBERS, SUBMIT IT AND IT WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE FLASH.

A Note from David Jusiewicz, Vice President of the State CPAAA who is recovering from heart surgery:

“My recovery is coming along well. Still have lots of aches and pains. I have finished sending out all of the charter membership certificates and pins and Charlotte has just sent me a bunch more. I have received several telephone calls from people who forgot they gave money and were totally surprised when they received their certificate and pin. So far, everyone is extremely pleased and honored that they should be recognized for their donation. Also, I have some pins and certificates left. If there is anyone who still would like to become a charter member, I would be happy to take their money, but dues apply also as of August 1st. I am working on merchandise boxes for each of the regional reps. A lot of people have not purchased merchandise and by bringing it to the regional meetings and any of the local meetings, we can sell more. I am planning on being at the meeting in September and will bring stuff then also. Thanks for your concern as to my well being”.

ALUMNI NEWS:

Houston.  The Houston CPAAAA will begin a new class on Thursday, September 7th. Because of increased activity at the academy, there were no classes offered in the Spring.  Our annual election of officers will also be on Sept. 7th and our installation on Oct. 5th.  We participated in National Night Out in our respective civic clubs. And we presented the award to the outstanding cadet at the latest Houston Police Department cadet class graduation.

Harris County.   Lt. Randy Casteel and Sgt G. G. Kirby of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Margaret Hooper of the HCSOCPAAA attended the 2006 Texas State Convention in Richardson.  This was Lt Casteel’s second convention, Sgt Kirby’s first, and Margaret Hooper’s sixth.  The 22nd CPA class in Harris County will start August 22 with 30 students attending.  The CPA in District #4 will be providing refreshments for this first class.  On August 23, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office will be having a Career Opportunity Day at its Academy and the Alumni Association will be providing refreshments.

Webster.  The Pancake breakfast will be held September 16 from 8 am to Noon in the Webster Civic Center, 408 S. Austin, just off of Pennsylvania which is the next street west of the police station.  $5 for all you can eat; children 6 & under free when accompanied by an adult. We operated a Bar-B-Que booth at the 4th of July celebration; we were right next to the DJ booth and the closest vendor to the stage. Work on a member handbook will resume this month.  This will contain bylaws, member lists, project/volunteer lists, meeting minutes, and whatever the member wishes to place in it.  Alumni officers’ copies will contain copies of incorporation papers, etc. A CPA class started Aug 3 with 18 students.  We even have a city councilman from Nassau Bay, which does not have a CPA program.  Sgt. Darrell Kelemen (our liaison officer) introduced the pre meeting speaker, Sergeant Joe Haralson of the Texas Rangers.  Joe talked about his 35 years in law enforcement and many of those years of service as a Texas Ranger. His talk was interesting and informative. His presentation provided the WCPAAA members with valuable insight into the work the Rangers perform. Our August meeting will be August 17 instead of our usual date because the city is holding a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for its boards, commissions, and committees and many of our alumni are involved. Georgie Benavides and Leo Waltz gave reports from the 2006 Convention to the July meeting.
