MAY MEETING
The May
Region One meeting was held in Dickinson
on May 14th where we were treated to a breakfast of Huevos Rancheros
and all the trimmings in addition to the usual breakfast fare courtesy of Mary
Sue and Ben Hernandez and their helpers from Dickinson.
Thanks, Dickinson
folks. The program was on the now infamous "Wicked City"
drug busts in Dickinson
a few months ago ably presented by Special Agent Ed “Bump” Collins of the DEA and
Officer Santiago "Turbo" Turrbiate of Dickinson. A lot was
learned about the war on drugs in general.
A motion was made and approved to have a Region One display table at the
convention in Waco.
There were 30 Alumni members present representing 10 Associations.
Region One Officers and Directors are soliciting suggestions about how to make
the Region One meetings better in order to increase attendance. Call any
of them with your suggestions.

The CPAAA was asked to
help with the collection of data and telephoning for the thousands of
outstanding warrants for the "Warrant Roundup". This
amounted to two weeks of day and evening work. April 29th and
30th was the Relay for Life event in which the CPAAA entered a team
called "The Jailbirds" and had participants continue to walk from 5:00 P.M. Friday until 6:00 A.M. Saturday to raise money for
the American Cancer Society. The team raised over $3,000.00 and won the
Most Original Booth Prize. The CPAAA had a bake sale, waited tables at a
local restaurant, sold luminaries and sold tickets to a "Kiss the
Pig" Event that evening. The two policemen with the most tickets
sold in their name got to kiss a two month old pig. Winners(?) were Lt.
Todd Jacobs and Cpl. Chris Jackson. A great time was had by all. On
May 10th, CPA Class 19 graduated 13 new members. A great
dinner was held at Blinn College with
highlights of the twelve weeks course reviewed and diplomas presented.
June 3rd was our annual garage sale to raise funds for the coming
year. August 20th will be the Guns and Hoses Blood
Drive
– a friendly competition between the Fire Department and the Police Department
to see who can get the most people to donate blood. A grant was
received from Wal-Mart for $1,000.00.

Dickinson. Chief Ron Morales addressed the Alumni
with an update on the drive by shooting incident at Nicholstone
Subdivision. He said the narcotics unit is doing a great job and has
exceeded his expectations. They had a big garage sale and bake sale on
April 30th. Their goal was to raise $1,600.00 to $2,000.00.
The Officers and K-9 dogs participated with the "Beat the Heat"
race car. They raised $1,400.00. May 26th was the Class 11
graduation. Our Relay for Life on April 22nd and 23rd
was for the American Cancer Society. $40,000.00 was raised toward a goal
of $60,000.00. We will be having quarterly recognition for officers,
alumni members and businesses. Our COPS program volunteers have put in
200 man hours. We have 21 members.

Houston. On April 28th, we graduated 16 students
from CPA Class 34 of which 11 joined the Alumni Association. On May 4th,
we graduated 23 students in CPA Class S-35, which was the first all Spanish
class in Houston. 21 joined the Alumni
Association. We already have a full all Spanish class scheduled for the
fall. During the week of May 15th, we participated in Police
Week activities at the HPD
Police Academy. HPD entertains thousands of
elementary school students with tours and events all week. Our general
meeting in July will be at Bush Intercontinental Airport with a program presented by the various
agencies at the airport and there will be a tour of the facilities. In
April we reported 298 volunteer hours to HPD not including attending
meetings. We meet on the first Thursday of each month and our board
meetings are on the Monday preceding the general meeting. We do not have
a general meeting in June or August.

Captain Dunlap reported that there will be a training class for Victims
Assistance members. The class will train people about Alzheimer's disease
and how to handle people with the disease. It was scheduled for Thursday,
May 26th at 6:00 P.M. in the LJPD conference room. If that
date conflicted with school activities, it would be postponed till June.
He also reported that the COPS program is underway. Hopefully, the first
training group will be sometime this summer. Former CPA graduate Saul Garcia
is now a Reserve Officer with LJPD. CPAAA members are asked to recruit
interested citizens to apply for the fall CPA class. Plans are to have
some publicity via City TV and FACTS. LJPD is currently looking for a K-9
officer to hire since the resignation of the one we employed. If anyone
knows of such an officer who might consider employment with the LJPD, please
call Captain Dunlap. The YCPA (Youth CPA) is tentatively scheduled for
the second week in July. The bylaws committee is working on some
revisions to the bylaws. A draft of the bylaws with changes will be
submitted to the membership in June. Ways and Means committee
member Laura Brandes reported the Dow grant application is currently
underway. It will be submitted to the Dow Chemical Company to compete for
a community grant by the deadline of June 15th. The grant will
be used to purchase a fingerprint machine. President Gene Brannan
mentioned the idea to consider sending out a community mass mailing letter
soliciting donations toward the fingerprint machine. The letters will not
be sent out until we know the outcome of our grant request from Dow. Two
new board members are George Gebriles and Fay Burke. They are filling
vacant board positions for the rest of the year. Plans for the Blue Santa
Golf Tournament are in progress. CPAAA volunteers will be needed.
In celebration of National Police Week May 15-21, the alumni recognized the
LJPD by sending all personnel a letter (59 letters) and a $10 bill to
"have lunch on us" during the week. Members were encouraged to
bring a dessert as a treat for the LJPD staff during police week. There
are 109 paid members of the LJCPAAA.
Pearland. The 100 Club/PCPAAA golf tournament
was held on April 18th and was a huge success, but no figures are
available at this time. Class 20 Graduation Dinner was held May 5th
at 2:00
P.M. at the
community center. On May 7th, the Party on the Grand was held
from 1-6:00
P.M. There
were booths, art from local artists, bands and dancing. Lots of fun.
Our board meeting was held on May 12th. The annual Pear Run
was held on May 14th at Independence Park. Our regular meeting was on May 16th
at 7:00
P.M. On
May 19th at 7:00 P.M. the Pearland Police Awards Night was
held at the KC Hall on Hatfield
Road. Our garage
sale on April 23rd netted $600.00

Sugar Land. On March 21-24th,
SLCPAAA members volunteered in the Texas Women in Law Enforcement 17th
annual convention. The event, sponsored by Sugar Land PD and Missouri City
PD, was held at the Sugar Land Marriot. Our volunteers put together gift
bags and manned the hospitality room from 7:00
A.M. till Midnight. We also made a $250.00
sponsor donation to the event. SLCPA Class 35 was held on Friday, April
15th. Ongoing volunteer activities include erasing tapes for
Patrol (which will soon go to DVD), filing fingerprint cards for ID and our
Adopt-a-Park cleanup. Our board members have been meeting with our Police
Chief and Liaison Officer to generate volunteer activities for our
members. We are preparing a proposal to present for consideration in
starting either a Citizens on Patrol (COPS) or a Handicap Program. We
would appreciate any information from other alumni/police departments that have
these programs in place. Please share your experience with us. Mail
to SLCPAAA, P.O.
Box 472, Sugar Land, TX 77478 or e-mail

. On April 14th, a self defense class for women was
presented by two Sugar Land police
officers. The class was open to our female members and immediate family
members. The class was very practical with both classroom instruction and
hands on training. SLCPA Class 36 starts in September. Application
and class information is available on the city web site http://www.sugar-land.tx.us/content/police-programs.htm
(Select Citizens Police Academy). An
article about the SLCPAAA was featured in the May, 2005 SLPD newsletter.
Webster. Our CPAAA provided a masseur
to provide on-site massages to the members of the dispatch staff. That
was a big success. We still volunteer on Thursday mornings when
needed. The appreciation dinner for the members of the Webster PD was
held on Thursday, May 12th and went very well. We had another
one on May 14th for the other shift. We had a CPA class
graduation on May 19th with 10 graduates. The handicapped
parking program started on Friday, May 20th. This will be on a
volunteer basis. We have about 10 alumni prepared to participate.

For those who are going to present
activities for your Alumni at future meetings, please prepare your write up in
advance and give the secretary a hard copy and a disc so she won't have to
retype. If you do not submit a written report, it will not be included in
the Flash. A good shortcut to get your news in the Flash is to send it directly
to CharlBill@AOL.com in the
body of an e-mail or as a MS Word attachment to an e-mail.
As the member CPA's have
their elections or have other changes to the information in the directory, be
sure to notify Charles Billingsley at CharlBill@AOL.com or 5942 Sanford,
Houston, Texas 77096-5837
or fax 713-729-7858. It is up to each member association to keep their
info up to date and current. THE NEW DIRECTORY WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE
SUMMER OF 2005 AND, ABSENT A NOTIFICATION OF CHANGES, WILL CONTAIN THE SAME
INFORMATION AS THE CURRENT DIRECTORY. As a refresher, the directory
contains the following information: Name and address of the Alumni
Organization; Names of Officers and Directors; Name of Liaison Officer; Contact
person including address, phone number(s) and e-mail; and Meeting info.
See the questionnaire that was attached to the March "Flash".
We need news of CPAAA
activities and upcoming events!! If you have any news or comments that
you would like to appear in the news "Flash", send to the
above. If you have a fund raiser or other event coming up that you would
like publicized in the "Flash" or in the Houston
newsletter, send to the above.
